Company of Heroes Online open beta closes on March 31

Posted on February 02, 2011

War never changes, but that doesn’t mean it can last forever. THQ has announced its MMO RTS, Company of Heroes Online, will conclude its open beta on March 31, effectively shutting down until THQ can “evaluate the next steps for the Company of Heroes series.” The news comes via the game’s official forums.

As of today, players will find they’re unable to purchase in-game currency from the website, though those who’ve stockpiled war funds can freely use them up until the March 31 end date. The missive also details an incentive for players who registered prior to February 1: a voucher for THQ’s online store that lets users pick up Company of Heroes: Gold Edition for $4.99, $25 off its suggested retail price (according to Steam). All eligible users can hit up this link for their coupon code.

[Thanks, David]

APB: Reloaded closed beta taking applications

Posted on January 10, 2011

GamersFirst are hard at work rebuilding APB for a free-to-play release later this year. A closed beta is set to start towards the end of February. Read on to find out how to apply.

GamersFirst COO Bjorn Book-Larsson announced the details on the APB blog. Applying for the beta is relatively simple. Head over to the APB site, enter your email address and create a GamersFirst account. A couple of weeks before the beta starts you’ll receive another email asking you to follow a link to confirm your beta application. Along with this you’ll have to send in a DxDiag report and more information about your PC and your gaming preferences.

It’s mentioned that GamersFirst are aiming to get 3-8,000 people on the closed beta for a while before moving into a bigger open beta phase. Those who participate in the beta will receive an unspecified form of reward when the game is fully released. Book-Larsson says “As a thank you to our beta testers we expect to give away a token that shows you were a beta tester back in the day. Trust us, we will not forget who you were.”

He also reveals more information on what will happen to old APB characters. Players will be able to reclaim their old characters along with all of the items and customisation options, but they won’t retain their mission progress. Book-Larsson mentions that Real Time World points won’t be refunded or useable in APB: Reloaded, stressing that GamersFirst “simply have no information about anything you bought via EA, Digital River nor Steam.”

For more information on GamersFirst’s plans for APB, check out our interview with Bjorn Book-Larsson.

Gears of War 3 Beta Announced for Early 2011; Uses Dedicated Servers

Posted on October 07, 2010

Now that Gears of War 3 has been delayed to the fall of next year, developer Epic Games is using the extra five months to add polish and run a multiplayer beta test.

The test, announced at a press event two days ago, will run sometime in early 2011, but no specifics were discussed. Up until this point, Epic had been using Gears of War 2 as an informal beta for Gears of War 3. The company has adjusted weapons to be closer to their Gears 3 counterparts and has even been running small-scale tests with dedicated servers.

Gears of War 3 will utilize dedicated servers for its ranked and social matchmaking games, which should finally eliminate the dreaded “host advan…
