Exclusive New Information About Find Makarov — Not A Modern Warfare 3 Teaser?

Posted on March 03, 2011

FindMakarov

Since the countdown clock with a Modern Warfare-esque font and sounds first appeared on FindMakarov.com, more pieces of information have slowly trickled out. First, Activision released a statement that claimed the thing was a hoax. Today, various sites have been reporting that the whole thing is actually a project of a Toronto-based production house called We Can Pretend, which has a few samples of their previous work on their website. The most interesting one is a video called “Occupation.” which is well worth watching (the Doritos Tablet is funny as well).

We reached out to FindMakarov.com, and through them we’ve heard from a source who is actually one of the owners of We Can Pretend, and while they didn’t reveal exactly what is going on with the site, which was recently updated to a new red look complete with a sweeping radar and the same countdown, it is obvious that we’ll know more later this week.

Additionally, they provided us with an exclusive image from the project, which you can check out after the break. It’s clearly from a live-action video, and presents a scene that looks familiar to those of us who have played Modern Warfare 2. Is this related to a sequel? Is it a company seizing a good opportunity for self-promotion? One thing is for sure: it’s highly doubtful that this is some sort of viral surprise reveal for Battlefield 3, because I doubt any publisher would go this deep into a rival’s game backstory.

At any rate, we’ll have more information for you this week, so stay tuned.

Dead Island: The Making Of An Amazing Video Game Trailer

Posted on March 03, 2011

Publishers have 30 seconds to grab your attention. 30 seconds to convince you to be excited for a game that you know nothing about. Some game trailers achieve this feat, while others flounder with poorly put together gameplay clips and drab visuals.?? Dead Island nailed it.?? Within 24 hours of its release, the heart-wrenching trailer gathered 1 million views on YouTube and sent the internet aflame. More importantly, it gathered excitement for a game that had practically been vaporware since 2007.

But who is responsible for the trailer’s success??? The answer is Axis Animation, a studio based in Scotland that has plenty of experience in creating superb game trailers. We got in touch with both the director and producer of the Dead Island trailer and they were happy to speak to us about the creative development behind the project.?? Read on for the full interview.

G4: How closely did Deep Silver and Axis work together? Was Axis given a script or storyboard beforehand?

Stu Aitken, Director. (SA): Originally, Deep Silver had sent us an initial brief that included a small script they had developed. From there, we built upon the ideas that Deep Silver brought to the table. There was one script that I had written that was more violent and gory than what was shown, but we decided that it was a bit too linear. At one point the action was taking place in the lobby/ kid’s area downstairs.

Dead Island: The Making Of An Amazing Video Game Trailer

From there we decided the action would be best suited in the actual hotel room; therefore, we decided on starting the scene with the daughter outside of the hotel. Both sides also discussed the level of violence.  We didn’t want to go completely over-the-top and be grotesque.

Malte Wagener, Deep Silver Global Business Development Director (MW): Of course zombies are firmly connected to grotesque violence, but we didn’t want the violence to be the focus of the entire trailer. The decision to tell the tale in a reverse narration actually evolved from that concern. We wanted the story to have room to develop… that was something that the Axis team understood very well—the level of violence we envisioned.

G4: Why focus the trailer on a family and their child?

SA: You have a little over two minutes to tell a story and within that time we wanted the audience to develop a strong emotional connection to the characters. This was the key goal for the trailer. This isn’t a bunch of stereotypical game superheroes that you’re watching. These are real people. The audience could very easily put themselves into their position…in order to convey that quickly, we focused on the strong relationship between a parent and their child.

Dead Island: The Making Of An Amazing Video Game Trailer

This isn’t just happening to you; this is happening to your family. We wanted the audience to connect with those emotions and empathize with the characters. Considering that the child is the most vulnerable part of that equation, it made sense to have these events center around her. The original script I wrote actually focused more on the mother;  the daughter was regulated to a side character.

The reason we revised and focused on the daughter was because she is the one who carries our sympathy and empathy the most. Also, the fact that she starts as the weakest member of the family and ends up attacking them in the end is an interesting inversion you couldn’t achieve with other characters.

Andrew Pearce, Producer (AP): It also shows what an evil force this zombie threat is. It does not simply stop at a helpless child…even this small girl is vulnerable to this group of zombies.

G4: In a majority of zombie fiction and film the survivors have at least one gun or projectile weapon. Was there any discussion of including weapons in the trailer?

Dead Island: The Making Of An Amazing Video Game Trailer

MW: (laughter) There was a lot of discussion about including a weapon, and that lead to about three weeks of just debating if they should use guns etc. Stu was actually very firm in regards to them not having guns.

SA: If these people were real tourists on an island, where would they get a gun from? That was the fundamental problem. Of course, we could have added one gun, but we would never have gotten beyond the explanation of how they came across them. The end product is much stronger because it lacks the guns. The trailer is about the vulnerability of the family. The audience simply couldn’t feel that if the family has weapons.

MW: We also wanted to convey what the game stood for. We didn’t want to include machine guns and other weapons because the game is not a shooter; it’s not like Left 4 Dead.

G4: Did any outside influences play into making this trailer?

SA: The “zombie canon” was created by the film industry. We had conversations on whether the zombies should feel more like George Romero’s Undead or the zombies featured in 28 Days Later. As for the trailer itself though, we didn’t really pull any influences from other zombie films. Sure, there may be similarities in certain scenes, but nothing that was deliberately placed.  There were some influences from other pieces of media that affected how I thought about approaching the trailer.

Dead Island: The Making Of An Amazing Video Game Trailer

A particular commercial by Philips, entitled Carousel, followed a bank robbery frozen in time. It’s a great example of a commercial being a piece of artwork that stood on its own two feet. We wanted our piece to have a similar feeling, carrying a different editing structure than your typical action film. We wanted the audience to experience the scene in a completely different way.

ST: We were getting great internal feedback within the Axis offices. Some of the guys not working on the project commented on the trailer. One of our lead artists actually told me that he was really happy that we had done a piece with more inherent value than the other throw-away trailers we’re used to seeing.  That said, I was totally taken aback by how many people were commenting on it and pulling it apart in such a short period of time. This was a really risky project for a game trailer, and I think those risks paid off.

MW: To be honest with you, we never really expected a response of this magnitude. The trailer has been covered in Forbes, L.A. Times, etc. This type of reaction is just not typical for a game trailer.

G4: Will we be seeing more of Axis’ work in upcoming Dead Island media?

MW: It has a lot to do with our communication strategy for Dead Island. There will definitely be more game trailers. Can you expect every game trailer to come from Axis and be CGI? That is very unlikely, simply because it wouldn’t be that good for the game. I believe CGI is a great way to deliver a story, but it’s unable to sell a game to real gamers.

Dead Island: The Making Of An Amazing Video Game Trailer

This trailer isn’t suppose to do that; this trailer is suppose to give players an idea of what we want to achieve in the game in terms of atmosphere, intensity, and especially, the fact  that it’s up close and personal. Personally, I think that the trailer conveyed that well. If there is another CGI trailer, the chances of Axis developing it are very high.

Killzone 3: The Story So Far — Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

Posted on March 01, 2011

Killzone 3: The Story So Far -- Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

It’s been nearly seven years since Killzone was first unleashed on the world, and while many of you are intimately familiar with the story of the Helghast Empire vs. the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance, many more of you have been scratching your heads and wondering, “Why should I care about Killzone 3?” We’re here to set the record straight, get you up to speed, and tell you everything you need to know, even if you’ve never touched a Killzone game in your life.

Read on for the full history of all the games, and you’ll be trigger-happy and ready to plow into the newest installment.

Killzone

On face value, Killzone is a first-person shooter, designed by Guerllia Games for the PlayStation 2. But there’s a lot more to it, isn’t there? What’s the story behind the conflict?

In the distant future, space colonization becomes extremely popular after nuclear war has left the Earth blasted and nearly inhospitable. Luckily, mankind has the technology required to colonize space, and they begin spreading throughout the Solar System, and beyond. Corporations also join in this massive (and expensive) venture, including the Heglhan Corporation.

Killzone 3: The Story So Far -- Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

Early on, the Company discovers Alpha Centauri, which is orbited by two planets: an Earth-like planet with oceans and trees (which they name Vekta, after their president), and a desolate, dead planet which they name Helghan, after the company. They begin settlement on Vekta, while using Helghan as a staging ground and outpost.

However, other colonies and companies recognize the strategic value of the Alpha Centauri system, and it isn’t long before heads clash. The United Colonial Nations impose an embargo on Helghan, which is meant to stop their dominance of the territory in the system. Helghan ignores this, and is then invaded by the United Colonial Army. The UCA overwhelms the Helghan forces, and boots the settlers from the company offworld to live on Helghan in the First Extrasolar War. In the meantime, the UCN has discovered that they need a broader force to exert military force, and they create the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance.

With the ISA now living on Vekta and enjoying its resources, and Helghan banished to the harsh and industrial planet Helghan, a new, charismatic leader begins taking charge of the Corporation: Scolar Visari. Born with the ability to breathe in both the harsh atmosphere of Helghan, and the normal atmosphere of Vekta, Visari begins rising to power and after staging an attempt on his own life, he conducts a coup and cleans out the Corporation administration, and declares a new Helghan Empire. He quickly builds up the Helghan military, and declares war on the ISA with an invasion of Vekta, sparking the Second Extrasolar War.

Killzone 3: The Story So Far -- Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

“Our forefathers embarked on the greatest exodus in the history of all mankind. An exodus for freedom, Helghan became that freedom. Our new world changed our bodies. At first, it weakened us, but in fact, we were growing … stronger. In the time you have given me, I have rebuilt our nation, I have rebuilt our strength, and I have rebuilt our pride! Our enemies at home have been reeducated; we have given them new insights into our cause. On this day, we stand united once more. On this day, those driven to divide us will hear our voice! On this day, we shall act as one, and we shall be ignored NO MORE! Defenders of the Helghast dream, NOW IS OUR TIME!”

Thus begins the events of the first Killzone, where you play ISA Captain Jan Templar, desparately fighting to hold off the Helghan invasion after Vekta’s orbital defense stations have failed, and overwhelming numbers of Helghan quickly overrun the unprepared ISA forces. Through the game, you discover that the orbital defense stations were deliberately taken offline to allow the Helghans to invade, and that there is a high-ranking traitor amongst your own. This same traitor plans on reactivating the platforms to take out the incoming Earth Defense Fleet, which results in the climactic battle of the game.

As things end, the Fleet has been saved, and Templar ponders what might come next for him and his fellow soldiers.

Killzone 3: The Story So Far -- Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

Killzone: Liberation

In 2006, Guerilla Games returned to the world of Killzone will the PlayStation Portable title, Killzone: Liberation. This third-person shooter has you controlling Jan Templar again, this time picking up two months after the events of Killzone. Several key hostages have been taken by the Helghast, and Templar and his team work to free them. In the fifth and final mission, available via DLC, it appears that Templar’s friend and fellow solider Rico Velasquez has been serving as another traitor, but in the climactic fight you’ll discover that he was framed, and you have to do battle with the real traitor.

Killzone 2

Sony set E3 2005 on fire by showing a tech demo of Killzone 2, which was to be a title for their upcoming new console, the PlayStation 3. Jaws dropped and pulses raced, but it would be two more years until we saw actual gameplay footage, and another two more until the game actually came out. Talk about a wait.

In the story, players take control of a new soldier, Tomas “Sev” Sevchenko, a member of the Legion unit of Special Forces assigned to Alpha Team. Sev and his soldiers are sent on a mission to eliminate antiaircraft support, so that the incoming ISA invasion force can land on Helghan. However, the Helghast have harnessed the electrical power on the planet, building giant arc towers that can eliminate any threat and fry soldiers instantly.

Killzone 3: The Story So Far -- Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

Scientist Evelyn Batton discovers that the arc towers are powered by Petrusite, of which large amounts can be found in the Tharsis Refinery on the outskirts of Pyrrhus, the captial city of Helghan. Sev and company decide to investigate, but several members of his team are taken hostage by Colonel Radec. Radec interrogates them, hoping to learn the codes for stolen nuclear weapon “Red Dust” that he possesses, stolen from the ISA.

Sev and group eventually work their way free, and return to their ship the New Sun in the ISA fleet. However, the Helghast have invaded the fleet, and all the ships are boarded. Colonel Radec works his way to the bridge of the New Sun, and mortally wounds the fleet commander. Someone very familiar to Killzone players. He steals the nuclear codes, and then leaves. In a final act of defiance, the dying fleet commander crashes the New Sun into the Tharsis Refinery, destroying the Petrusite defense grid.

The ISA regroup and try to invade Visari’s palace to stop him, but a nuclear bomb is set off in the city, destroying most of it, and cripping the ISA forces. Sev and Rico battle their way towards Visari, facing Colonel Radec in the process, and eventually capture the leader of Helghan. But his words tempt Rico past the point of no return, and he riddles Visari with bullets. As he dies, Sev looks to the skies and sees an enormous Helghast fleet, set to attack.

Killzone 3: The Story So Far -- Bringing You Up To Speed On The World of Killzone

Killzone 3

Killzone 3 opens immediately following the events of Killzone 2, with the Helghast devolving into chaos and civil war following the loss of their leader. Various political factions fight for control of Visari’s throne, with two major players trying to win: Admiral Orlock and Jorhan Stahl. You’ll once again take control of Sev as you try to to stop a Helghast regrouping and subsequent invasion of Earth. Of course, with new games come new abilities, and Sev can jump into jetpacks, or even remove some mounted weapons to carry with him.
