Double Dragon punches iOS in the gut

Beat-‘em-ups are woefully under-represented on the App Store, but one of the genre’s earliest classics has arrived to help fill the void. Enter the … Double Dragon. Aksys Games has released Taito’s seminal scrapper in updated form, compliments of developer Brizo Interactive, for an “introductory price” of $3.99 — steep, yes, but set to increase to $7.99 at an unspecified point.

App Store reviews of the game — which is ported from the Zeebo platform — are mixed so far, with most complaints focused on the unnecessarily large (and opaque) “control panel.” Still, it’s said to be faithful to the original’s gameplay and features multiple unlockable characters. Minecraft Headed to iOS Devices This Year

Indie megastar Minecraft will be released for iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad later this year, Gamasutra reports. Rip-offs and clones of Mojang’s dig ‘em up have been made for Apple’s magical consumer electronics devices before, but nothing official.

Mojang founder Markus ‘Notch’ Persson explained to Gamasutra that the iOS version won’t necessarily receive all the same updates as the original version, which is still in beta, but rather only features which “make sense” for the touch-screen devices. The port is being handle…

iOS 4.1 Update Hits iTunes, Includes 'Game Center'

As teased last week, the first major iPhone software update to Apple’s iOS 4 is now available on iTunes.

‘Game Center’ is one of the many features included in the update, enabling multiplayer gaming, game-based achievements, and leader-boards.

Also chief amongst the updates included in iOS 4.1 are iTunes TV show rentals (for $0.99 a pop), iTunes Ping (a Facebook-like notification feature for iTunes), HDR photography, and HD video upload capability. Check out the image for a list of additional feature updates.
