Final Fantasy III on iPhone will be a port of the DS version (iPhone)

Posted on February 27, 2011

Square’s initial post on its Final Fantasy III iPhone teaser site offered little more than a release date. As it turns out, the publisher was saving all the details for Japanese game mag Famitsu, which published the first comprehensive look at the game this week…

iPhone review of the day: Legendary Wars – How do you improve Plants vs Zombies? Unicorns (Legendary Wars)

Posted on February 18, 2011

The modus operandi of Legendary Wars isn’t much different than that of hundreds of other castle vs. castle or tower defense games available in the App Store. Your castle is on one end of the side-scrolling battlefield, the enemy’s stronghold is on the other. You mine gems and then use the gems to create an army to defend your turf and raze the other guy’s to the ground. But Plants vs Zombies proved that adorable art and music combined with near-perfect gameplay can transcend this simple concept. And Legendary Wars was taking notes while reading Tolkien in the Ren Faire beer garden…

Star Wars: Imperial Academy seeks recruits on iPhone

Posted on December 07, 2010

Ngmoco’s freemium Star Wars: Imperial Academy is available now on the iPhone and iPod Touch. The four-player deathmatch arena shooter has players leveling up to outfit their clones with the latest (addendum: a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away) in Stormtrooper weapons and armor. Of course, this being a freemium title, one can also just pay their way to fame. We hear Jabba the Hutt has reasonable interest rates on loans.

The controls for the game are certainly an acquired taste, but at an initial cost of “free,” it won’t cost anything to see if they work for you. For us, that thing went on and off the iPhone faster than an ice cube’s lifespan at midday on Tatooine — with both suns out.

Now you can play Gunstar Heroes on iPhone, if you want

Posted on November 24, 2010

Of the Genesis games ported to iPhone by Sega so far, we would suggest that Phantasy Star 2 was the best idea. It’s turn-based, which means that you don’t really need to rely on the virtual controls for quick, reflex-based actions. On the exact opposite end of the “good idea” continuum is Sega’s latest iPhone port: Gunstar Heroes.

You could think of it as an “expert” edition. If you’ve somehow managed to master Treasure’s run-and-gun masterpiece on the Genesis and/or Game Gear and/or Virtual Console, now try it without the benefit of knowing where the buttons are! Gunstar Heroes for iOS does have one rather impressive feature going for it: Bluetooth-based multiplayer. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a set of Tactile+Plus stickers!

Think iPhone and other mobile devices aren't relevant to videogames? You’re wrong (iPhone)

Posted on November 20, 2010

There’s a mutiny afoot. A revolt among the proletariat, who refuse to swallow the propaganda of their oppressive masses. Basically, people are sick of hearing about mobile gaming. Be it the iPod, iPhone, iPad, Android or even the newly unleashed Windows Phone 7, many gamers cannot understand why their favorite gaming news sources are chatting so much about expensive novelty items that aren’t “real” gaming consoles. They simply don’t understand why these products are relevant to videogames…

Rage HD iPad Gameplay Video Shows Bar Being Raised

Posted on November 19, 2010

id Software released its stunning on-rails shooter Rage for the iPad and iPhone today. The game is available in standard definition ($.99) and high definition ($1.99), and while the gameplay is fairly straightforward – shoot everything on screen before the mutants bash your brains in – the graphics on display in this game are simply spectacular, and we’ve been waiting eagerly to get our hands on it since it was shown at QuakeCon 2010. So we decided to put together a little video montage of some of the high intensity action you can expect should you pick up the game for yourself. Some things to keep in mind as you’re watching: how the enemies maneuver around the levels, the little details in the environments, and that this is an iPhone/iPad game.

Rage: Mutant Bash TV rail shoots id Tech 5 onto an iPhone

Posted on November 15, 2010

Bethesda’s upcoming id Tech 5 engine has us pretty excited. It continues the long-standing rivalry between Epic’s Unreal Engine and id’s storied Doom and Quake engines. However, the battle is very different this time around — as both engines vie to create the prettiest game for Apple’s iPhone.

John Carmack showed off a quick iOS prototype at QuakeCon earlier this year, but IGN has managed to secure video of actual gameplay. Rage: Mutant Bash TV is not a port of the console and PC shooter Rage. Instead, it’s an arcade-styled rail shooter that has you shooting mutants with a variety of weapons. As you’ll see in the video (embedded after the break), the game doesn’t seem to offer much in terms of nuanced, thought-provoking gameplay.

But, that’s not really the point, is it? Mutant Bash TV is certainly pretty, an unbelievable accomplishment for cell phone gaming. Oddly, if you have a VGA cable, you’ll be able to output the game to your TV and play it on the big screen. Nothing like playing a handheld port of a console game on a TV, right?

iPhone game of the day: The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition)

Posted on October 15, 2010

It’s common for devoted fans to buy a landmark movie or piece of music over and over and over. For example, I’ve purchased the original Star Wars trilogy on VHS (twice), laserdisc, bootleg DVD and legit DVD. I’ve also bought Journey’s album Escape on cassette, vinyl, and CD – though never when it was quasi-fashionable, as it is now. And with the sounds of iTunes’ virtual cash register, I have now plunked down for The Secret of Monkey Island for the fourth time. The point of this self-indulgent reverie? It’s been worth it every time because the game is still hilarious…
