Tofu Boy being added to Super Meat Boy PC in next patch

Posted on December 04, 2010

Team Meat has cheekily responded to yesterday’s PETA Super Tofu Boy parody by announcing that it will add the soy-based protagonist as a downloadable character in the next Super Meat Boy PC patch. The character will only be available on PC, since the XBLA can’t be patched in the same fashion.

In a blog post, Team Meat’s Edmund McMillen said he “repeatedly made fake user names” in PETA’s forums, trying to push the game in hopes of a response. Well, he got one — and so did they.

McMillen added that the parody was “beyond flattering and amazingly helpful,” but also had some harsh words for PETA’s stance on animal testing. He also reiterated, just in case some folks weren’t aware, that Meat Boy isn’t actually made of animal meat, “he’s simply a boy without skin.”

And here come the Robbie Williams “Rock DJ” flashbacks again.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit PC patch to bring law-breaking bugs to a stop

Posted on November 27, 2010

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit‘s dev team has been combing the code of the game for some additional features and bugfixes, and both of those are set to peel out in the title in a patch next week. The patch should lay down an EMP on issues with multi-core CPUs, pop a spike strip on some runaway rain and snow effect issues, and set up a roadblock for a few other crashes and problems, stopping them in their tracks.

One issue that won’t get fixed: the obsession born from the game’s Autolog feature as you tryto beat your friends’ times by just a few more seconds. The developers have decided that it’s a personal problem, so you’ll have to patch yourself on that one.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Patch Tweaks CPU Performance

Posted on November 22, 2010

Another patch was deployaed for the PC edition of Treyarch’s record-breaking shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops on Saturday via Steam, bringing more much-awaited performance tweaks and fixes for a handful of other issues.

As with the previous performance patch, there’s no clear consensus on how much this actually remedies the PC version’s notorious performance woes, as our own Xav experienced. If you played a little Cod Blops on PC over the weekend, how did you find it?

Here’s the short but s…

Call of Duty: Black Ops patched

Posted on November 13, 2010

Call of Duty: Black Ops has just received a new patch. The update is focused on improving performance, particularly on systems with dual or quad core CPUs. CPU performance is supposed to be the issue behind the stuttering that many players have been experiencing when trying to play online, so if you’ve been experiencing those issues, this update will hopefully solve them. The patch also includes a “Friends fix for join in progress and Friends tab in server browser”. Steam will apply the patch automatically the next time you start up the game.

New Civilization V patch in the works

Posted on November 12, 2010

Firaxis have set about outlining the content of the next big patch for Civilization V. The next batch of changes are going to concentrate on improvements to the AI and diplomacy, and contains fixes you’d only ever see in a Civ game, like “adjust Napoleon to make him more likely to go for culture”, and an “update to tactical AI pillaging code”. You’ll find the complete list of changes are below.

  • Worker AI improvements .
  • Update to tactical AI pillaging code. Additionally, always check to make sure it’s not trying to pillage in an enemy dominance zone.
  • AI victory emphasis improvements (more efficient end-game when focusing on Science and Diplo victories).
  • AI should colonize other continents regularly.
  • AI will emphasize production of an Ocean going explorer unit when the time comes.
  • Adjust Napoleon to make him more likely to go for culture.
  • More aggressive second wave expansion (mostly off shore) after initial empire building and consolidation has occurred.
  • Optimization when finding routes (pathfinder improvement).
  • Multiple tweaks and bug fixes.
  • AI will now build ranged and mobile units more in line with the flavor settings.
  • Multiple defensive AI tweaks.

  • Cities heal more quickly.
  • Only allow one upgrade per unit from a goody hut.

  • Tweaked the single-player score list to hide the civs of unmet ai players.

  • AI’s attitude towards you is now visible in the diplo screen and diplo drop-down.
  • Added info tooltip for an AI leader’s mood. Lists things that are making an AI player happy/upset.
  • New diplo system: Declaration of Friendship (public declaration with diplomatic repercussions).
  • New diplo system: Denounce (public declaration with diplomatic repercussions).
  • New custom leader responses (Serious Expansion Warning, Aggressive Military, Luxury Exchange, Borders Exchange, Gift Request).

  • Parent category counts now include counts of child categories.
  • Selecting/deselecting a category now automatically selects/deselects it’s children and its parent.
  • Tweaked category name truncation to better fit names.
  • Hide categories w/ no children and a count of 0.
  • Added support for fallback languages (if mod is not translated, fall-back to English so text keys are not showing).

  • Fixed save format which causes saves to increase the memory footprint of the game drastically when loading frequently over the course of the game.

There’s no ETA for the patch just yet, but the devs are keeping the patch list updated over on the 2K forums.

Update: New Vegas PC And 360 Updates Pushed Overnight, PS3 Coming Soon

Posted on October 24, 2010

2nd Update: According to Bethesda’s blog, a new game update went up on Xbox 360 overnight resolving quest and scripting problems, similar to the one released for PC earlier this week (see below). An even newer update is also live on Steam as well for PC versions resolving issues with game saves.

Senior producer Jason Bergman explains: “We are also pleased to say that we have just released a second fix for PC users to address the autosave and quicksave issues that some people were encountering. That particular issue was never seen prior to release and it was extremely difficult to reproduce reliably, even after the game had launched. In order to fix this problem we have had to disable Steam Cloud functionality. It has been turned off, and we won’t turn it back on until we’re absolutely sure it will not cause any more problems. Please restart your Steam client to make sure you get the update.”

The blog also states that the PS3 patch has gone live in Europe, and they are still waiting on word for other territories.

Update: Earlier today Bethesda released a statement regarding bug fixes for Fallout: New Vegas and promised a formal announcement was on the way. We’ve heard back from Bethesda and word on the street is the first New Vegas patches are now live.

According to Bethesda: “We have just released an automatic update for the PC version of Fallout: New Vegas that resolves quest and scripting issues. We’re working hard to make this update available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game as soon as possible and will let you know as soon as we have the dates they’ll be up.” The spokesperson also says “The issue regarding the PlayStation 3 digital preorder bonuses has also been resolved. Users should attempt to re-enter the codes to download their bonuses. Should the “80023156” error continue, we ask that players wait 24 hours before entering the code again. The code should then activate the bonus without any issue.”

We’ll let you know once we hear more on the PS3 and 360 updates once that information becomes available.

Original story: Fallout: New Vegas is a lot of fun, but players have been running into a startling number of bugs, glitches, and crashes. Characters have been seen falling through the ground, enemies have disappeared, and the game has simply stopped working for some unlucky players.

Reiner mentioned some of the issues he encountered in his review:

The bleak surroundings are made worse by the fact that New Vegas lacks
polish. Mid-battle a foe may suddenly plummet through the game world or
get stuck on a rock, making for an easy kill. The pathing for AI
characters wandering the wastes often takes them into the side of
buildings or parked vehicles. When enemies die, some of them will float
a good five feet in the air. I even ran into a reoccurring bug where my
gun wouldn’t stop firing after a loading sequence. To top it off, I
broke the last boss by hiding on a rock. He just stood there as I
unloaded 300 bullets into him.

According to Bethesda, help is on the way. “We are currently working on releasing patches/updates as quickly as possible for Fallout: New Vegas, for all platforms,” says Pete Hines, the company’s head of marketing. “Announcements regarding the patches are forthcoming.”

Stay tuned.
