Crysis 2 multiplayer demo also coming to PS3

Posted on February 27, 2011

Looks like Crytek’s planning to pull a nanomechanically-engineered hat trick with its multiplayer demo for Crysis 2 — it’s out already on 360, it’s coming to PC on March 1, and according to the game’s latest official trailer (posted after the jump), the demo is “coming soon” to the PS3 as well.

We’ve contacted EA to get a more specific timeframe for the demo’s arrival. For now, check out the video after the jump to see exactly how the game looks on Sony’s home console. Actually, you could just go read the back-and-forth in these YouTube comments between PS3 and 360 fanboys — it’s just as entertaining as the trailer itself.

‘Filmy’ PS3 app lets you view and organize video captured by Sony cams

Posted on February 10, 2011

We should clarify — the new PS3 app lets you view and organize video from your Sony-branded digital camera, not the footage captured by the Sony cams hidden throughout your home. As you know, those are designed to detect the arrival of new, exciting games and then send notice of a new firmware update just as you’re putting in the disc.

There’s no need for a disc when accessing “Filmy,” the sounds-like-a-cute-mascot video app that becomes available on the PlayStation Store today. Once downloaded and installed, it allows viewing of AVCHD-encoded video from any USB-connected Sony camera that supports the format. Videos can be searched quickly and organized into digests based on camera metadata (such as “Face Detection”) or geographical tagging, if the camera has a GPS. If you’ve been anywhere remote and/or remotely interesting, you’ll be able to find those clips marked on a fancy representation of our space-faring orb.

There’s a free version of Filmy that allows full feature operation for fifteen minutes, but the less curtailed version will run you $5. You could probably earn that back by turning your camera on the bedroom, recording a spooky message written on a fogged-up mirror and then selling the whole thing to a Hollywood studio as “Abnormal Happenings.”

Sackboy finds success at last, while Mass Effect 2 isn’t massively effective (LittleBigPlanet 2)

Posted on January 24, 2011

LittleBigPlanet didn’t set the world alight when it was released in 2008. Sure, it received rave reviews and got to the top of the PS3 charts, but the PS3 install base wasn’t so great at the time so it never really got the attention it deserved. Sony then claimed it would be a slow burner. Media Molecule stated that there would not be a sequel as it wasn’t that kind of game. Turns out a sequel was exactly what Sackboy needed to hit the big time – and now it’s here, he has.

Mass Effect 2’s Interactive Comic — Familiarizing PS3 Gamers With The Mass Effect Story

Posted on January 23, 2011

BioWare has made a special interactive backstory comic for the PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2. ME2 is the second game in the trilogy but unlike many games your choices actually do matter. Xbox 360 and PC gamers could transfer their saved files from Mass Effect 1 sending over their character’s likeness and choices. These choices shape the events of Mass Effect 2.

Gamers who are playing ME2 for the first time on the PS3 won’t have the option to play ME1 where these key choices take place. To make sure PS3 players don’t miss out on any of the story BioWare made an interactive comic to help gamers catch up on the events of the Mass Effect universe while quickly making the choices that defined the game. The 15 minute comic covers all the major events of Mass Effect 1, prompting you to make choices sequentially as you follow along. To find out what we think of the comic and if it does its job familiarizing players with the Mass Effect universe check out our review for Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 next week.

PS3 piracy – it begins. First hacked game shown running on unmodded PS3 (PlayStation 3)

Posted on January 10, 2011

After last week’s cracking of the PS3’s master key, it was only a matter of time before the first full pirated game booted up on PS3. And… it has. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow has been shown running off a hard drive, with the PS3 convinced it’s a PSN game. GeoHot, the hacker responsible for publishing the key online, may well be ‘totally against piracy’, but the pirates in question are gleefully touting ‘GeoHot’s custom firmware’ as their springboard. D’oh.

PS3 Users Gaming Under Half The Time On System

Posted on December 17, 2010

A recent Nielsen survey analyzed usage stats for gamers ages 13 and up to find out how the three major home consoles are used. PlayStation 3 fans seem to be taking the “It only does everything” ad tagline to heart.

As you can see from the chart above, PS3 users love watching Blu-rays and DVDs, and tend to tinker with streaming video. The Wii dominates in the gameplay category. This can most certainly be attributed to the fact that the system cannot play DVDs, since streaming video watching is still relatively high. The Xbox 360 leads in online gameplay time investment and barely edges out the PS3 in offline gameplay.

Check out the full preliminary report from Nielsen to see a few more interesting charts and stats.

Sony Cambridge is working on something big

Posted on November 09, 2010
Sony Cambridge is taking a crack at a huge franchise.

Out of the various Sony development studios across the globe, Sony Europe particularly the Sony Cambridge firm has gone through a huge shift of sorts. After being a powerhouse in the PS1 and PS2 era, Sony Cambridge was relegated to a technology studio along with tackling PSP and PlayStation Eye/Move projects.  Sony Cambridge going that route was a bit disappointing especially in the wake of The Getaway and Eight Days getting cancelled.

ESRB rates Namco's 'Aero-Cross' for 360 and PS3

Posted on October 11, 2010

The ESRB rating for Namco Bandai’s Aero-Cross (first seen in Australian and German ratings) includes a content description that confirms our suspicions about it being a follow-up to the surreal, arcade foot-racing game Metro-Cross. It’s a futuristic racing game about a running man, just like Metro-Cross was, and places obstacles in front of that runner like “mines, hurdles, and rolling barrels.”

New to this game: robots that administer a shock to the racer, “resulting in a shocking effect that causes the racer’s body to twitch.” That’s progress! Aero-Cross was rated for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, likely as a downloadable game.
