World of WarCraft: Cataclysm

Allow our World of WarCraft: Cataclysm zone videos to shed some light on what’s new and different in the new expansion. Blizzard’s Lead World Designer Alex Afrasiabi takes us on a guided tour through the newly destroyed world, showing off all the new terrain and freshly created arenas that you’re certain to be exploring as you venture your way through WoW: Cataclysm.

Check back here often as we update this page with a tour of yet another area of Azeroth so you can re-learn the world you’ve spent so long trying to conquer.

Your Guide To The Underwater Realm of Vashj’ir

Vashj’ir is a brand new zone and one of the first you can travel to on your journey from levels 8-85. It’s one of the most beautiful zones in all of World of Warcraft, has a great storyline, and it’s completely underwater. The developers faced a lot of very interesting challenges in the process of making an underwater zone and, ultimately, it looks like they’ve succeeded.

Developer tidbits:

  • Challenges of making a completely underwater zone
  • Lore behind the friendship of Deathwing and the Naga
  • The visual themes seen in Vashj’ir
  • A new boss is on the horizon in the form of animal Gods in Vashj’i

The Secrets of Stormwind

Stormwind City is now the major central hub for Alliance players. With Cataclysm, tons of new things are happening in this gorgeous, bustling, sprawling metropolis including the implementation of portals to new zones, a complete graphics overhaul, and even new roleplay heavy districts that you can visit.

Developer tidbits:

  • The challenges behind making the zone flyable
  • Talking about the ground treatments and technology
  • Overhaul on Stormwind Keep
  • Access point of portals for 80-85 relevant zones
  • The roleplaying aspects of the redesigned Stormwind
Uldum

Uldum is a new zone that is primarily Egyptian themed. While Egyptian themes in WoW aren’t exactly new (think Silithus) with Uldum, the developers have created a rich and lucious landscape filled with pyramids and pharaohs as well as a very intriguing storyline that focuses on the Titans.

Developer tidbits:

  • Design theories behind the Egyptian aesthetic
  • Lore behind Uldum and how it ties in with Wrath of the Lich King’s Ulduar storyline
  • Alliance and Horde conflict in Uldum
